Argyle Battery

Trials were carried out at the Castle during the early part of 1861 to find the most suitable battery from which to fire the signal. The master gunner originally planned to fire the signal from the Argyle Battery using one of the twelve pounders, pointing towards the Scott Monument. He changed his mind and decided to use the twenty four pounder standing next to the flagpole on the Half Moon Battery, pointing towards the Nelson Monument.
