Edinburgh’s Greyfriars Kirk is open to visitors on Thursdays from 11.00 am till 4.pm. Guides are available to show visitors round the church. Services resume this Sunday although the congregation is restricted to fifty people.

Firemaster Pordage
Arthur Pordage who was born in Dunbar was appointed Firemaster of the Edinburgh Fire Brigade in 1896.
Firemaster Wilkins
Samuel B. Wilkins was appointed Firemaster of the Edinburgh Fire Brigade in 1876.
Firemaster Williams
Richard C. Williams was appointed Firemaster of the Edinburgh Fire Brigade in 1872.
Leith Fire Brigade
Leith had its own fire service. The photograph shows Firemaster Brown and his deputy with a selection of fire fighting equipment at Leith Fire Station in 1892.
Younger’s
The photograph shows the members of Younger’s Brewery Fire Service in 1880.
Plaque
James Braidwood was appointed firemaster of the City of London Fire Brigade. He was killed when a wall fell on him when fighting a fire in the 1860s.
Manual
James Braidwood produced a manual showing how fire engines should be built and listed the tools they should be equipped with in 1830. Fire brigades all over the world followed the instructions in the manual.
High School
James Braidwood attended the High School.
